More than just Stereo – the DAC8x

One of the major limitations of the Raspberry Pi since the beginning has been the limitation to 2-channel audio for HATs. While this is just fine for most applications, there are use cases where you would like to use more than 2 output channels. You might think about home theater or spatial audio. But there are lots of other applications you could think of: playing 4 independent stereo streams on the same Pi or even create software-based crossovers for 4-way speakers. We’re interested to learn what you will do with it!

The driver development for the DAC8x took us longer than expected as the Pi5 audio subsystem is still very new. We want to thank especially Phil Elwell from the Raspberry Pi foundation who helped with the necessary patches.

Now, here it is: The DAC8x.

As the driver infrastructure is still new, we like to start with a public beta test for this new product. We offer a 30% discount on this board for all beta testers. As always with these beta tests, we offer the normal 2 year warranty and 30-day money-back guarantee as for all our HiFiBerry sound cards. If you want to join the beta test, just order the DAC8x from our web shop and use the coupon code dac8xbeta on checkout. A datasheet for this new board is also available already.
